Young fish friers shortlisted for national award

5th January 2009, 12:19pm

Five up and coming friers have been shortlisted in the Young Fish Frier category at the national Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition which is set to kick off on 22 January at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel, London.

The five successful contestants are: Alastair Horabin, 24, of Seniors in Thornton Cleveleys, Will Walne, 19, of Thornton Fisheries in Thornton, Amy Mitchell, 23, of Hodgsons Chippy in Lancaster, Raymond Fusco, 20, of Royal Fisheries in Whitby, and Daniel Harding, 20, of Angel Lane Chippie in Penrith.

Briar Wilkinson, sales director, said: "The competition is celebrating its 21st birthday this year and in that time, the industry has come on leaps and bounds. Young fish friers now have the opportunity to carve themselves a career in this exciting industry and it is vital that we nurture talented individuals and encourage them to provide the best quality and customer service possible.

"All of the finalists are incredibly passionate about the industry and have developed extensive knowledge about the industry at a very young age. Regardless of the result, I am confident they all have promising futures ahead of them."

With nearly 276 million meals sold each year from over 10,500 shops, fish and chips remain the nation's favourite takeaway.

Fish and chip shops throughout the UK have seen an increase in customers and sales for the first time in five years.
