Young Food Writer of the Year Announced

19th July 2011, 9:35am

An 11-year-old pupil from Somerset has won the 2011 WriteIt! competition, fighting off stiff competition from many other young food writers.

Joseph Wigley has won the annual competition, organised by the Guild of Food Writers. The contest is open to entrants aged up to 18 years old. Entrants were asked to write a descriptive piece of about 1,000 words, either fiction or non-fiction and based on a food-related subject.

Judges praised Wigley's feature, called Mad about Marrows!, for its originality and impressive use of descriptive language.

The judging panel included Karen Barnes (editor of delicious magazine), Matthew Fort (food writer for The Guardian) and Bee Wilson (author and food columnist for The Sunday Telegraph's Stella magazine).

Home-schooled, Wigley has won a laptop, as well as the opportunity to have his entry printed in delicious magazine.

The judges also highly commended Aisha Abdel-Samie, aged 9, from Ellsmere Port; Kathryn Espino, aged 14, from London; and Andrew Carrick, aged 14 from County Armagh, who all won a selection of cookery books.
