York Food and Drink Festival promises best programme yet

The organisers of York Food and Drink Festival, which starts on Friday 17 September, are promising more events and activities on its ten-day programme than in previous years.

The festival will focus on encouraging Yorkshire farmers and producers to take stands in the market place.

This year's festival will include The Grazing Café, which has been introduced to highlight delicatessen and farm produce.

There will also be a large marquee, built over the fountain in Parliament Square, which will be turned into an eaterie named Fountain Café for the duration of the event. Run by 'Made in Yorkshire' the café will sell sandwiches and soups, made using fresh Yorkshire produce.

Entertainment at the festival will include "a whole range of" early evening community activities, the majority of which will be offered to visitors free of charge.

And guests dropping in on the team at the Fountain Café from 5pm daily are promised to be "entertained and enlightened" on arrival.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "York city centre will be buzzing with excitement for ten days solid as the York Food Festival promises to be the biggest and best yet.

"Visitors can get their taste buds around a wealth of fine foods and drinks as well as enjoying the vast array of impressive markets, chef demonstrations, guest speakers, tasting workshops and street entertainment.

"York Food Festival is one of the key events in the region's calendar in showcasing the first-class range of local Yorkshire produce as well as helping to bring tourists into our county and keeping Yorkshire as the number one holiday destination in the UK."
