Wye Valley goes fourth with Britannia Inn acquisition

23rd March 2010, 11:08am

Acting on behalf of Punch Taverns, Christie + Co, has sold freehold of the Britannia Inn, in Hereford, to Wye Valley Brewery, the Herefordshire-based brewer and pub operator, for an undisclosed sum, off an asking price of £150,000.

Situated in a densely-populated residential area, the two-storey, Victorian end-of-terrace property, which is within walking distance of the city centre, features a 30-cover bar, 10-cover games room, large trade garden, and a three-bedroom owner's accommodation.

The pub, which becomes Wye Valley's fourth, will be re-opened after a refurbishment in five to six weeks time.

Wye Valley Brewery, which was named overall winner at last year's SIBA Brewing Business Awards, currently operates two other pubs in Hereford, the Barrels, and the Rose & Lion, plus the Morgan in Great Malvern, Worcestershire.

Nicholas Calfe, director at Christie + Co's Bristol Office, who handled the sale, commented: "The marketing of this property attracted several offers, mainly from developers seeking to convert it into residential dwellings. However, it was pleasing to see The Britannia purchased by a reputable local brewery, which has saved it from becoming another 'lost' pub."
