Wetherspoon has best toilets in the UK

9th December 2008, 9:06am

JD Wetherspoon has won the Loo of the Year Awards 2008 in the pubs and wine bars category in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Ivy Wall in Spalding, Lincolnshire, The Cross Keys in Peterhead, Scotland, The Tumble Inn in Pontypridd, Wales and The Ice Wharf in Derry, Northern Ireland, were named as the individual winners of the award for pubs and wine bars.

In addition, Wetherspoon won the Corporate Provider national award for the excellence of its toilets across the UK.

It also achieved a Standards of Excellence award for maintaining a consistently high standard of management in all of its Loo of the Year Awards entries.

The award also recognises the high number of five star ratings for the company's individual pubs (inspectors rate toilets from zero to the maximum five stars).

Wetherspoon entered 109 of its pubs for unannounced inspections. Fifty four of the pubs received a five star rating and a further 55 a four star rating.

The Loo of the Year Awards 2008 is aimed at highlighting standards of 'away from home' toilet provision across the UK.

Authorised inspectors made unannounced visits to hundreds of pubs over a three-month period.

Awards Director Mike Bone said: "All of the inspected toilets are judged against numerous criteria including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hygiene equipment and overall management.

"Wetherspoon is a worthy winner of the four main individual awards in the pubs and wine bars category, as well as the Corporate Provider national award, and the company continues to be the best pub toilet provider in the UK."

Wetherspoon Chief Executive John Hutson said: "We are delighted with the awards and it highlights our commitment to providing quality toilets at all of our pubs. Our staff ensure that the pub toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that their efforts have been rewarded."

The inspectors clearly haven't visited Maidstone's Wetherspoon toilets. They are vile. I refuse to use them. They never have any loo roll. The floor is constantly covered in water and the sinks are always overflowing and blocked with tissues. Not nice! And to top it all several cubicles are missing their doors!
