WORLD'S FIRST 'MILK IN A STICK' PORTION IN THE FOODSERVICE MARKET

9th July 2008, 2:43pm

Single Source, the UK's largest manufacturer of single serve portions for the foodservice market, is delighted to announce a 50% stake-holding in Dairystix Limited, creators of the revolutionary “milk in a stick” product. The joint venture will significantly broaden the market opportunity for the Dairystix brand, and looks set to cause a major stir in the foodservice industry.

Neil Goodwin, Commercial Director of Single Source comments, "We are very excited to be involved with Dairystix. This unique product offers both commercial and environmental advantages over the traditional "jigger" packaging that it is designed to replace. The stick format is stylish, modern, convenient, easy to use and space saving, with less packaging waste. Each stick takes up to 40% less space than its jigger rival and once empty leaves up to 50% less plastic packaging weight to be disposed of. As far as milk is concerned, good things now come in smaller packages - that's good for our customers' business and good for the environment too!"

The stylish Dairystix pack is the first aseptically portioned stick pack in the world and the biggest innovation in the single milk portion sector since the 1960's. The world has changed a great deal in that time and Dairystix is a 21st century product meeting 21st century needs.

Dairystix already has an impressive list of customers on-board. These include Compass Catering, Tesco coffee shops nationwide, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines, Makro and Booker cash & carries, Alliance National, Bunzl and Norfolk Ferry Lines.

Director of Dairystix Limited, Ed Roberts, comments, "The take up for Dairystix has been fantastic. We are currently producing 2.3 million portions per week. Based on packaging waste figures, that equates to 64 tons of plastic not going to landfill as a result of existing customers alone this year - and that's just the start of it. The new partnership with Single Source will bring us onto a completely new level.

Dairystix packs are made at a state of the art 65,000 sq ft milk processing facility in Plympton. The launch of the pack represented the culmination of several years of research and development, and subsequent certification of the manufacturing technology by Leatherhead Food International.

The packs have proved a hit with consumers who are familiar with the stick format from sugar and many other products supplied by Single Source. After years of messy jiggers, Dairystix have come as a refreshing change.

Dairystix is currently available in farm assured fresh (ESL) and UHT formats in semi skimmed and whole milk. Each 12 ml stick contains additives-free pure milk, supplied exclusively by UK farms. Sticks come in cases of 200 units.
