UK hospitality skills heading for world stage in Japan

12th October 2007, 2:56pm

The international skills competition, WorldSkills 2007 kicks off next month and three of the UK's top hospitality workers will be representing the industry.

Set in the foothills of Mount Fiji in Japan the competition takes place over four days and over 200,000 spectators are expected to attend.

Making up the UK team are:

Graham Squire from Claridge's in the cooking category

Will Torrent from Richings Park Golf and Country Club in the confectioner/pastry chef competition

Julie Doig from Gleneagles Hotel in the restaurant service category

The UK team was selected back in March after a number of assessments designed to find the best in their field. Each member since then has been training under the supervision of a manager who will also be flying out with them for the competition.

Simon Bartley, Chief Executive of UK Skills explained why the team members were chosen: "These young people have earned the right to represent the UK in Japan.
Each one proved their abilities at the selection event earlier this year and has dedicated six months to perfecting their skills under the expert eye of their training manager. Now is their chance to test themselves against the best in the world and I wish them every success in doing so."

Other industries competing include: beauty therapy, web design, floristry and engineering.
The WorldSkills competition comes to the UK in 2011.
