The UKBC aims to raise standards throughout the industry, help baristas hone their techniques and encourage training and development within their establishments.
The top scoring barista in the National Final will be crowned UK Barista Champion 2011 and will go on to compete in the World Barista Championship in Bogota, Colombia in June.
For baristas interested in taking part in the UK Barista Championships 2011 can visit www.scaeuk.com for more information and to download an entry form. Entry costs £35 (£25 for SCAE members). The deadline for entries has passed but there are still a few places left in the SW and Scotland.
Meanwhile the Latte Art, Coffee in Good Spirits and Cup Tasters Championships are all taking place at Expowest in Exeter on 1st – 3rd February and there are places left for all these competitions. Entry into these is free of charge.
John Sherwood, chairman of the SCAE UK, comments: "We have had a great response from baristas entering the heats nationwide, which is excellent news for the coffee industry as it indicates the dedication and passion from baristas to build on the speciality coffee sector. Places are filling up quick though, so interested participants should act fast!"
