Two South Hams Pubs to be restored

28th June 2010, 8:52am

Licensed property agents Bettesworths, acting on behalf of a National Pub Company, have just negotiated the sales of two well known South Hams Inns.

The Kings Arms is situated in the main street of the South Hams town of Kingsbridge.  The Hotel has 14 en suite letting rooms, a main bar and restaurant with over 70 covers and The Cockworthy meeting room with 30 covers. In addition there is a private flat with two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and lounge.

Martyn Kelly of Bettesworths has reported that the Inn has been taken over by local businessman Pete Walker of Quercus Brewery, who is in the process of carrying out a programme of refurbishment and improvements before reopening in a few weeks time.

Walker plans to return the Inn to its former glory as well as making The Kings Arms the flagship for Quercus Brewery, the independent family brewery, he established in the Summer of 2007 in nearby Churchstowe. The ethos is to produce imaginative quality ales and these will be on offer at the Kings Arms, together with a range of good food and comfortable accommodation.

The other South Hams Inns pub is the historic Odd Wheel Inn. This character village Inn, which has been closed for several months, has been acquired through Bettesworths by local licensees, David and Christine Colmar, who for the past 12 years have successfully run the nearby Elburton Hotel. After a major refit, David and Christine are planning to reopen The Odd Wheel in mid July.

The pub has two character trading areas, a commercial kitchen, trade garden and car park. There is also two bedroom private accommodation.

The financial details of both transactions remain confidential, but Martyn Kelly of Bettesworths added that both properties were let on new 'free of tie' long term leases, providing the new operators with opportunities to re-establish what were previously thriving businesses.
