Top chefs raise quarter of a million for charity

19th June 2008, 11:56am

Paul Gayler, executive chef at The Lanesborough Hotel, celebrates after raising a massive quarter of a million pounds with his ‘Cooks for the Cure’ team in aid of the Emily Begg fund for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The fundraising campaign began in September 2007 with the teams' participation in the Great North Run, and then moved onto a gala evening in February for 350 guests hosted by Brian Turner CBE.

The campaign culminated in a nationwide tour, seeing some of the country's top chefs sponsoring dinners at their local catering colleges.

Top chefs to take part in the initiative included Andrew Bennett, executive chef of the Sheraton Park Lane, Henry Brosi, executive chef of The Dorchester, and Simon Young, executive chef of Jumeriah Carlton Hotel.

Paul commented: "I hope this helps to make a significant difference to those young people who are battling cancer, by building a place where they can be with other patients the same age in appropriate surroundings."

Six teenagers are diagnosed with cancer each day – that's over 2,000 ever year. Teenage Cancer Trust ensures that young cancer patients get the best possible care in hospital and the chance to do all the things that teenagers do.
