Three chippies shortlisted for National Training Award

10th December 2009, 11:29am

The Real Food Café in Tyndrum, Harbour Lights in Falmouth and Royal Fisheries in Whitby have been shortlisted for the Staff Training and Development Award at the national Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition, organised by Seafish.

Owners Sarah Heward, Peter Fraser and Carol Fusco and their teams will now be judged to decide the overall winner which will be announced by celebrity chef, Aldo Zilli, at a London ceremony on 21 January.

Heward said: "We are overjoyed to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award. I strongly believe in serving up high quality produce by skilled and knowledgeable staff, which is why I am committed to investing in the future of all my employees. I am really proud of the team for all their hard work and we are excited to see what the final holds in January."

Fusco commented: "We are really excited to have been shortlisted for this award for the third time. We are committed to the development of our staff and we enjoy the benefits in the form of higher morale from employees and a highly skilled workforce. Having also made the top 10 shops in the UK, it's going to be a really exciting event for us in January."

Fraser says the secret to his success is giving his staff responsibility and letting them input to how the business is run. Harbour Lights has also achieved Investor in People (IIP) status.

Richard Wardell, the seafish training and accreditation adviser who oversees the judging of the Staff Training and Development Award, said: "Each of this year's finalists has shown that when a business invests in its people through education and training, a long and gratifying career can be enjoyed in the fish and chip industry."

The Staff Training and Development Award is sponsored by James T. Blakeman & Co, manufacturers and suppliers of high quality sausages.
