The search is on to find Spanish Young Chef of the Year 2011

18th October 2010, 11:48am

The hunt has begun to find this year's Spanish Young Chef of the Year.

The competition, run by Foods from Spain, is open to students and chefs already working in the industry up to the age of 25.

Entrants must design a three-course Spanish-inspired menu for four covers, using specified Spanish fruits and other foods in each course, supplying details of ingredients, method, and a colour photograph of each dish.

Each course must feature one ingredient from the following pairs; Strawberries or raspberries; Picota cherries or persimon; and rice or pulses. Entrants are also encouraged to use additional Spanish ingredients.

Last year's winner, trainee chef Selin Kiazim, takes up a stage placement at El Bulli in December this year. David Alun Powell of Westminster College, London, took the title the previous year and gained experience in four separate Michelin-starred restaurants – including three-starred El Bulli - since his win.

This year's prize will be a similar working placement – including accommodation and travel expenses paid – at another of Spain's most renowned restaurants.

The competition will be judged by a small panel in two stages, a paper-based first round, followed by a cook-off in London for eight finalists.

The closing date for round one of the Spanish Young Chef of the Year competition is Friday 3rd December 2010, while the cook-off final will take place in January 2011.
