Firstly, it was discovered that much of the services infrastructure (water, heat and power) were in a far worse condition than they had anticipated and in most cases the pipeline and electrical networks had to be completely replaced.
Secondly, the restructuring works peeled back layers of history, revealing original design elements that had been hidden for decades, and it was important that these were either protected or, in some cases, incorporated into the new designs.
The project has been plagued by delays. The iconic hotel closed for the refit in December 2007 and was expected to open in May and was then put back to March this year.
The extensive refit, which is worth £100 million, is being handled by designer Pierre Yves Rochon.
The renovation includes the addition of two new bedroom Royal Suites, the complete remodel of the River Restaurant and the re-launch of the 58 River Suites. In addition,The Savoy Grill will return again under the operation of Gordon Ramsay Holdings.
And new to the hotel will also be The Beaufort Bar and Savoy Tea Shop.
