The Royal Standard

11th October 2007, 4:01pm

We find out how interior designers Dtwo revitalised and raised the standard at this trendy pub in the heart of South London.

Background:
Original premises style: Dilapidated pub playing host to Friday night Disk Jockeys inspired by the early 90s House scene with the obligatory karaoke night thrown in. Classically tired look consisted of beige carpets with electric pattern to hide a multitude of sins, basic bric-a-brac throughout adorned to large expanses of painted plaster skimmed walls. – In short a miss fit for the well-to-do social scene that is Blackheath!

Timetable:
This was a four week fast paced and fluid fit-out. Much of the design and finishes were undertaken and worked out on site and away from studios due to such incredibly tight constraints on lead time. In short a tight and exciting project.

Dtwo Design seem to enjoy rejecting other 'now' tastes in the search of 'future things new'. One common theme is using materials in innovative ways by pushing a material's properties - be it laying oriented stand board usually found on building sites, pouring concrete into places you never thought possible, creating walls of sound or warping wallpaper in rejection of the dreaded 'Damask' which has seen such a resurgence in popular culture over the last couple of years.

Based right in the middle of Shoreditch, the creative heart of London, Dtwo is hard pushed to run out of new ideas and are more than capable of finding other company's who are actually willing to build our environments. The leisure industry demands those who can match enthusiasm, skill, talent and boundless creativity. As one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, its constantly seeking out new blood.

The hottest style by far is all about doing your own thing, doing it well and keeping it simple.

Dtwo's recent projects include:
Sosho, City, London
Sosho House, City, London
The Hide, London Bridge, London
Beefeater Gin, Bar 07, Earls Court, London
O.P.I, Selfridges, London
Idlewild, Maida vale, London
Thirst Lodge, Oxford.

Type of project:
Major refurbishment with out any structural work

Inspiration:
Pub culture, especially in the south, has seen huge change over the last decade fuelled largely by shifts in lifestyle. More choice breeds higher expectation, not only on the interior but on the venue's offer.

Pub and fine dining operations such as the new 'Royal Standard' are now about delivering great service, efficiently building great drinks or consistently knocking up plates of grub with intelligently & thoroughly sourced ingredients culminating in their presentation in exciting and comfortably designed environments accessible to all, well, within reason!

Brief:
To create a comfortable and exciting new space built around a heavily 'tweaked' operational infrastructure. These include: major revisions to space planning internally, installing and re-locating a new kitchen, adapting the existing bar layout, services and offer and increasing opportunities for outdoor eating and drinking with the provision of a secret garden.

Forget cutting corners or considering that clients are another face in the crowd; Dtwo's prime concern is forging close relationships, being willing to actually live and breathe in our world and to maintain an unerring respect for its partner's desires. – Dtwo listens and this is how we fulfil and manage the establishment's expectations.

Key Features:
Black on black wall paper, solid 'teak tree trunk' coffee tables, cut crystal & vintage 70s chandeliers, chaise-longs, Raised dining areas, apartment areas, gloss painted blown vinyl, backlit CNC cut fence panels and naturally a one meter tall matt black cuckoo clock!
