When the pub came up for sale Matt Bettesworth, the selling agent knew that there would be lots of interest. The pub, which is held on an 18 year lease from November 2002 at a rental of £20,000, has a ground floor Bar and Dining Area with seating for 40 plus and a first floor Restaurant with covers for between 40 and 50 overlooking the river.
The lucky new owner is Steve Sussams, an experienced operator from London. Steve was recently involved with three major licensed businesses in London, 2 of which are in Canary Wharf.
The Royal Dart re-opens on the 14th May 2009, offering a meaty menu including steaks cooked on stone, 100% Aberdeen Angus beef burgers and a safari choice of Crocodile, Impala and Ostrich. Steve commented that he wanted something special to appeal to the meat eaters, as there are plenty of fish restaurants in the area.
The Royal Dart is situated at the waters edge in Kingswear, an important yachting centre with a thriving marina. Kingswear is the main crossing place from Torquay to Dartmouth and the South Hams with separate car and passenger ferries operating from just nearby. One of the major local tourist attractions, the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway terminates adjacent to the pub. Steve is looking forward to the season and the challenge that lies ahead.
The pub was sold for an undisclosed price by Matt Bettesworth of Bettesworths on behalf of the outgoing owners Mark and Aileen Kimber.
