The Orchid Group launches Woodland Wednesdays

15th May 2008, 12:40pm

The Orchid Group is set to launch a campaign this week aimed at increasing the sales of English wines and simultaneously increasing the number of trees in English woodlands.

The campaign 'Woodland Wednesdays' will see 130 of Orchid's pubs and restaurants committing to planting trees in English Woodlands every time English Wine is purchased on a Wednesday. For every £5000 raised, this will enable one acre of trees to be planted.

Julie Trustram Eve, marketing director of the English Wine Producers Association, said: "Orchid is always looking for ways in which to enrich its offer to its customers and to do so ethically. This latest commitment to British wines, in conjunction with the planting of trees in English woodlands is exactly the sort of business venture we delight in."

The latest English wines to be included in Orchid's portfolio have been sourced and overseen by wine specialist Bibendum, and come from the Chapel Down Winery at Tenterden Vineyard, Kent, where grapes are grown on the chalk downs or Essex clays.

Today, there are over 1.7 million bottles produced each year and that is expected to double over the next five years.

James Brodrick, from Carbon Managers, the Company aiming to reduce Co2 emissions and help companies give back to the environment, will be planting tress for Orchid in their woodland based in Bath, Somerset.

The number of UK vineyards has risen from 281 in 1984 to 362 in 2005.

This campaign has launched purposely to coincide with English Wine Week which runs from 24 May until 1 June.
