The Met team up with 3663 First for Foodservice in scheme to blast harmful greenhouse emissions

15th July 2010, 9:54am

The Met has teamed up with the energy company Convert2Green and the food and catering supplier 3663 First for Foodservice in an operation that allows them to recycle waste vegetable oil and reuse it to power the vehicles that deliver their groceries.

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) has teamed up with the energy company Convert2Green and the food and catering supplier 3663 First for Foodservice in an operation that allows them to recycle waste vegetable oil and reuse it to power the vehicles that deliver their groceries.

Convert2Green collects and recycles the waste cooking oil of all 93 of the MPS's police canteens which is then converted into a B30 diesel mix – containing 30% bio fuel and 70% diesel – which is then reused as fuel for the delivery lorries that deliver their produce.
The result of the method is a reduction of the Met's impact on the environment and the production of quality bio-fuels - whilst recycling waste into carbon savings.

Since getting involved in the recycling scheme in March 2010 almost 9000 litres of waste oil had been collected by May of the same year – amounting to a CO2 saving of 18.23 tonnes.

Director of catering services for the MPS Caroline Mortimer said: "We are trying to reduce the amount of oil the MPS use in order to encourage healthier eating. In the meantime, we want to make sure the oil we do use can be disposed of in as green a way as possible."
