The AFW secures deal for new competition partner

The Academy of Food & Wine (AFW) has secured a three-year contract with Champagne Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck to be the new competition partner.

The UK Sommelier of the Year competition has been running for 28 years, and in this time, they have had just two headline sponsors.

Nick Scade, chief executive of the AFE service, commented: "Wine service is an important area in the hotel and restaurant industry. If a waiter does not know or understand his or her wine list and how to sell products or satisfy the customer needs, the employer's investment and resources are being wasted and the business will suffer.

"This competition allows us to recognise and reward those Sommeliers who are excelling in the field. Champagne Piper-Heidsieck & Charles Heidsieck's support will allow us to continue this good work."

Anne-Charlotte Amory, president of Champagnes Piper-Heidsieck & Charles Heidsieck, commented on the contract: "We are proud to support The Academy of Food & Wine and this prestigious competition. Sommeliers are the most prominent ambassadors of the wine industry and it is critical for all of us to recognise them and the important contributions they make to the food and wine community."
