SIBA to host Great Northern Beer Festival later this month

6th October 2011, 9:35am

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) is hosting its second Great Northern Beer Festival in the city later this month.

Approximately 18,000 pints will be pulled as more than 3,000 beer lovers from across the UK will make the trip to sample 250 cask ales.  All of the beers have been donated free of charge to the festival.

Festival organiser, Alex Brodie, said:  "The Great Northern Beer Festival is true taste of the brewing revolution in the North. No warm beer, no drafty halls, no dirty glasses and no flat beer.  Its proper Northern beer with a proper Northern head, served through proper hand pumps at proper cellar temperature and in a clean glass every time.

"Moreover it's at the city's Mercure Piccadilly Hotel, right in the centre of Manchester.  All these elements are what it makes it so different and considerably posher compared to other beer festivals."

David Daly, general manager of the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, formerly Ramada, added: "We're extremely pleased as a hotel to be hosting the Great Northern Beer Festival, especially as we have beaten a number of other city centre venues. Last year's event was a success but we are determined to help SIBA make this year's an even bigger success."

The festival will follow a judging competition where 80 breweries will compete in eight categories to then go through to a national competition.
