The Great Northern Beer Festival runs from October 28th – 30th and is being held in the city's Palace Hotel. Some 300 cask and 120 bottled beers are being provided by SIBA's northern brewers for the competition, held on the first morning, and the three-day festival which is expected to attract up to 5,000 visitors.
In addition, the organisers are building a temporary chilled beer cellar from scratch in the Palace Hotel and installing a 56-foot bar for the 56 handpulls.
Alex Brodie, festival organiser for SIBA's northern region, said: "This is a celebration of the current revolution in brewing in the UK, which now has over 700 breweries – more than at any time in most of our lifetimes.
"This festival is about SIBA – the brewers themselves - showing the public the exhilarating range of beers now being brewed in the North... a Great Northern Beer Festival in the centre of a great northern city."
The nine winners from Manchester will go through to the SIBA National Beer Competition in Nottingham in February 2011.
SIBA has collaborated with the Palace Hotel and with Manchester CAMRA.
