Royal China Canary Wharf reopens after facelift

16th June 2011, 12:20pm

The Royal China Riverside in Canary Wharf closed its doors in March for a refit of its bar, interior and al fresco terrace. It has recently relaunched to the public. We take a look at its new look.

Mr Lok, operations director at Royal China Group, explains….

What was your aim when designing this project?

To continue to be the most successful Chinese restaurant in Canary Wharf.

How did you achieve this?

The overall colour scheme is gold, with black lacquer walls, mirrors and floor to ceiling windows. The restaurant has two different hand painted wall murals. Gold and silver geometric tiles have been used in the bar area, with black rattan chairs and black topped metal tables on the patio.

What would you describe as the key and unique features?

The key focal point is the hand painted mural which features Royal China's signature waves. It is painted in dark muted colours and lit from the bottom so at night the mural appears third.

What is the size of the venue?

The restaurant seats 130, with outside seating for 80.

Timetable, how long did it take from start to finish?

It took two months to refurbish the restaurant, closing mid-March and re-opening 15 May 2011.

What do you like most about the design of the venue?

We like all of the design features, from the bar to fish tanks, and private dining.  feedback given from customers has been that the hand painted mural, which appears third at night, is their favourite overall feature.

If you were to change anything about the design, what would it be?

We wouldn't change anything about the design as it is exactly how we envisaged the restaurant looking.

Do you think you used the space to the best of its ability?

The space around the bar area has been maximized to its full potential as there is no longer dead space in that corner. It is an inviting area, which people can use whilst waiting for a table. The improvements outside increases the usability of the patio as well. The layout of the main restaurant and private dining areas has remained the same as this did not need changing.

What are your plans for the future?

Royal China Canary Wharf will erect permanent umbrellas with outdoor heaters on the patio in the near future.

How important is feedback from your customers?

Customer feedback is very important which is why we are handing out comment cards during our opening phase.

Tell me about some of your other projects?

Royal China Group will be giving Satsuma in Soho a total renovation, with a re-launch scheduled for 1 September 2011, and Royal China Queensway will also undergo a total refurbishment later this year.
