Restaurant owners face huge illegal workers fine

9th June 2008, 12:33pm

Restaurant owners in Perth are facing a possible fine of £110,000 after eleven workers were arrested on immigration offences.

The men are reported to be from Pakistan, India, Iran, China and Bengal, with five of the men arrested at the Manzil restaurant, three at the Aladdin Café, two at the Aladdin Takeaway and one at Hong Kong Express.

Insp. Paul Menzies, from the UK Border Agency explained how the arrests came about: "This was an intelligence led operation to ensure the safety of the public who visit Perth's restaurants, takeaways and licensed premises.

"Employing illegal workers is harmful to our communities, and unfortunately a small number of employers are flouting the immigration laws, and we are determined to step in and identify those employers and to remove those people who do not have the right to be in the UK."

Employers could now face a £10,000 fine per employee if it is found that proper checks were not carried out when the men were initially taken on.
