Posh nosh falls victim to voucher discounts

6th July 2009, 4:33pm

The recent influx of vouchers into the mid-market restaurant sector now means that diners are reluctant to step foot in an eatery without a discount coupon.

According to new figures from price comparison website, moneysupermarket.com, over 25% of Britons will not consider eating out unless they have a voucher giving them money off.

Research also shows that long lunches are off the menu in the fine dining sector with 70% of these high earning diners say eating out is the number one luxury they've cut down on.

Foodies are currently making considerable savings from restaurant discounts with over 40% of Brits now using a restaurant voucher at least once a month.

The top five most popular restaurant vouchers on moneysupermarket.com are: PizzaExpress, Zizzi, Strada, Haha Bar and Grill, and Bella Italia.

Simon James from moneysupermarket.com's said: "Restaurant discount vouchers have become increasing popular over the last 12 months or so as the nation's appetite for a value has increased. Brits have cottoned on the fact that you don't have to pay over the odds to get good grub and in many cases, you can get it for half price."
