Mustik, a Caribbean retreat, opens in the heart of the City

3rd September 2010, 3:42pm

For diners and cocktail connoisseurs looking to escape from the pace and pressure of capital, the opening of Mustik is a new Caribbean concept that provides a tropical oasis in the heart the city.

Following the closure due to fire damage of Worship bar on the corner of City Road and Worship Street, owners Seb Albert and Alexandre Zune have reopened as Mustik following a four-month refurbishment.

By day Mustik operates as a dining destination until 11pm. As the evening turns into night, the emphasis is on cocktails and unwinding to laid back Latin House and New Disco provided by a selection of top DJ's until 4am.

To compliment the resort theme Mustik has teamed up with Caribbean food specialist, Yah Man, led by Trinidadian chef Hasan DeFour to provide a menu that is authentic, flamboyant and affordable.

Snacking dishes included the Jamaican national dish Ackee and salt fish (£3.25), saltfish salad with sweet peppers, hot pepper, onions, thyme and ackee, the most famous fruit of the Caribbean; Pholourie (£3.25), yellow split pea fritters, served with a pepper and tamarind source (£3.25) or Alloo pie, a fried dough filled with spiced potato filling (£2.00).

Main dishes include Braised Oxtail and Butter beans (£8); Jamaican Escoveitch (£7.50), described by Hasan as a 'must-have' dry, fried dish, with pickled Scotch bonnet peppers, carrots and onions served with red snapper; plus a choice of salmon, red snapper, chicken or sautéed vegetables served in the traditional jerk seasoning of thyme, nutmeg and scotch bonnet.

An extensive bar area split between two floors offers a vast selection of rums from all over the Caribbean and as far as Mauritius. An extensive cocktail list from mixologist (Michael Bolbotowski, formerly of Carbon and K2) includes a daring range of Martinis, Flutes, Long and Short cocktails.

Albert said: "We've created a getaway destination that is like taking a holiday for an evening. Mustik; a place where people can escape, unwind and enjoy the finest in Caribbean food or simply somewhere to lounge about for an amazing array of cocktails and place to chill-out to laid-back music with friends and colleagues in an intimate space."
