A source told the Financial Times that the shortlist of three was formed after another three candidates allegedly spurned the pub group's approaches.
According to the report, Simon Emeny MD at Fuller's and Mike Tye chief executive of Spirit were both approached – something M&B denies.
The Financial Times' article reports that Joe Lewis' involvement with M&B is having an impact on the recruitment process which has now been running for almost a year, after Adam Fowle quit last March.
The source told the newspaper: "Lewis is a big negative in the recruitment process – they need to go find someone who is outside the sector. But M&B is still the Manchester United of the pub sector so they could offer a football manager's package [whereby] a CEO goes in on a high salary expecting a rough ride."
