Managing director of Greene King launches Carbon Trust's 'Best Advice' scheme

9th July 2010, 9:44am

Justin Adams, managing director of the Greene King Brewing Company, has launched The Carbon Trust's 'Best Advice' campaign to help alert local businesses to the availability of a carbon survey which has the power to slash energy bills by as much as 20-30% per year.

Some 57% of business decision makers in the area said they are worried about the unstable economy, while a half (50%) said they worry about energy price hikes.  A similar number (49%) admitted to being concerned about tax increases.

Nearly a half (46%) of the businesses surveyed said that one of their top three resolutions is to reduce the amount of energy their business uses.  Despite this, nearly one in ten (7%) admitted that no one within their organisation is responsible for managing their energy consumption and controlling costs.

The Carbon Survey, available free of charge to all businesses that spend between £50,000 and £3m on energy each year, provides the services of an energy expert on-site and a tailored energy-saving action plan.

Adams said: "There are all sorts of things that can be done to reduce energy consumption through mechanics and process but one of the best opportunities comes from changing the culture in the workplace. We managed to make savings of over £200,000 simply by implementing a 'Turn It Off' campaign to spread energy awareness amongst employees."

Greene King received its first Carbon Trust survey in 2006, which set the company on a journey to energy efficiency for which it has now been recognised by the Carbon Trust Standard.  In the past two years Greene King's work with the Carbon Trust has cut its CO2 emissions by 9% and 15,000 tonnes.  The brewing and distribution division alone delivered an 11% reduction in carbon emissions during that time.
