Created by von Essen hotels, in conjunction with Laurent-Perrier Champagne and sponsored by Bibendum Wines; the award scheme now in its second year, aims to recognise the hotel team with a passion for wine, a well-balanced, thoughtfully presented wine list and a team that is focused on the relevance to the hotel's positioning in the market and of course, to the guests.
The judges were Paul Brown, prestige manager from Bibendum Wine, John Cleary, national accounts controller from Laurent-Perrier Champagne and Anne Cannon, purchasing director, von Essen hotels.
The judges were once again focusing on the three main areas of presentation, content and marketing/training. The judges take into consideration the use of wine in the hotel to enhance the customer experience, such as wine tastings, events and staff training (on site and off site). In addition, the judges also compared wine lists to the same point in 2008 to identify how it had developed.
As well as being the overall winner, the Lower Slaughter Manor also won the Classic set. The team won a Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle gift box and an engraved Decanter to display in the hotel.
Meanwhile the Moonfleet Manor won the award in the Family set and the winner of the Country set was Seaham Hall.
