James Hoffmann, the UK's National Barista Champion, has become World Barista Champion 2007 after competing in the finals held in Tokyo, Japan.
Competing at the World Barista Championship in Tokyo, Japan, James held off top baristas from over 40 competing countries to lift the world title.
James also won the award for the Best Signature Drink of the 2007 competition for his unique biscotti and tobacco flavoured espresso infusion. This is the first World Barista Championship win for the UK.
James was accompanied in Tokyo by his own support team and a delegation from the UKBC (UK Barista Championship), part of the UK Chapter of the SCAE (Speciality Coffee Association of Europe), which also provided sponsorship for James to attend the event.
SCAE Board Director and UK Co-ordinator Steve Penk of La Spaziale was in the team that travelled to Tokyo: "James has worked tirelessly to win this title, which he thoroughly deserves. The standard of UK baristas and Barista training has grown dramatically over the last two years and James has consistently been at the forefront of this trend. James' win brings great credit to the UK speciality coffee sector, an achievement of which we can all be extremely proud."
Heather Perry of the USA was placed second and also received the award for the Best Espresso. Third place went to Carl Sara of New Zealand, while Miyuki Miyamae of Japan took fourth place and the prize for the Best Cappuccino. Finalists Anna Kaeppeli of Switzerland and Silvia Magalhaes of Brazil came fifth and sixth, respectively.
