JD Wetherspoon sees an 'encouraging start' to first financial quarter

4th November 2009, 9:20am

Pub company JD Wetherspoon has announced like-for-like sales for the 13 weeks ending 25th October 2009 up 0.3% and total sales for the same period up 4.5%.

The firm said this start is "encouraging" especially when taking into consideration that the same period last year involved a higher level of marketing expenditure, including the distribution of money-off vouchers to most households in the UK.

Wetherspoon opened seven pubs during the first quarter and said it plans to open a total of 40 pubs by the end of its financial year.

In a statement, the value-for-money chain said: "We remain confident of the Company's prospects for the financial year ending July 2010."
