JD Wetherspoon gets saucy with Levi Roots

13th May 2009, 7:50am

Pub operator JD Wetherspoon has teamed up with Dragons' Den entrepreneur Levi Roots to create a meal on its new menu using his Reggae Reggae tomato sauce.

Reggae Reggae chicken nachos is available in all of the company's 720 pubs across the UK from today.

Topped with chicken breast pieces, the nachos are complemented by the Levi Roots special Reggae Reggae tomato sauce.

The sauce is also one of the toppings on Wetherspoon's new gourmet vegetable burger.

Levi Roots won a wide fanbase after securing financial backing for his Reggae Reggae Sauce on the BBC2 programme, Dragons' Den.

Wetherspoon's assistant food development manager, Lewis Brigden, explained how teaming up with a pubco is a first for Levi Roots: "We are the first pub company to create a meal featuring the sauce and are confident that our customers will enjoy the Reggae Reggae chicken nachos, as well as the sauce on the gourmet vegetable burger."

Levi said: "I am thrilled that my sauce can now be enjoyed by Wetherspoon customers across the UK. The company has an excellent reputation for its food and I am proud that Reggae Reggae tomato sauce is now a feature of its menu."

Reggae Reggae sauce recipe originated in Jamaica and passed down families via word of mouth. The sauce and brand were developed at home in Brixton, south London, by Levi Roots and family.

It was sold for 15 years at Notting Hill Carnival and started to be sold commercially as a result of BBC2 Dragons' Den show and backing from panellists Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh.
