What was your brief when designing this venue?
To create a design that was more subtle, layered, delicate and discovered, with a feeling of great attention to detail and sensitivity to the beauty of the room itself, as well as its Georgian features including the windows and views over the river.
How did you achieve this?
We commissioned the Contract Chair Company to provide furniture. We also designed some large bespoke pieces that the Chair Company built for us. We wanted the furniture to have character and to be varied as we didn't want the concept to look uniform.
The upholstery included mixed subtle metallic tones with varying textures to give it a deep, layered feel. We wanted some of the pieces to feel hand crafted and intricate – e.g: the embroidered silk wall panel and the rose leather work on the high back sofa.
The leather work was by Helen Amy Murray www.helenamymurray.com and the carpet was provided by Shaw Carpets.
How long did this project take – from start to finish?
Six months.
What would you describe as the key and unique features of Bingham?
The bespoke furniture – there is a bespoke cheese servery and a liqueure servery in the restaurant.
Comment on the finished result:
I feel the overall outcome really emodies what we were aiming for at the beginning of the project. We wanted to give the Bingham a more personal boutique feel and give the restaurant more warmth in terms of the interior which I feel we have succeeded in doing.
And for more detail on the designers themselves:
How and when was the design company set up?
Caulder Moore was established in 1990 by Ian Caulder, creative director and Irene Maguire, marketing director.
Does your design team have a particular signature style?
No, we do not have a house style. Caulder Moore specialises in emotive brand experiences – creating retail environments that engage customers through expressing the unique emotive essence of a brand – a process that directly enhances brand performance and presence by creating clear differentiation.
Stage by stage, how do approach a new project?
We work collaboratively with the client and would start off with mood boards that visually communicate the direction of the design, then move to developing design concepts and material boards, and after client feedback, we would move forward with one design route and take this through to detail design intent drawings and detailed specifications of the materials to be used.
Who are your team members?
Jane McIver – designer
Ian Caulder – creative director, who would oversee the creative direction of the project.
What are your recent projects?
Tantrum – children's hair salon,
Westover Clinic – private clinic, Notting Hill
