How Bunzl’s ‘BeGreen’ policy is gathering speed

11th August 2009, 10:48am

According to recent figures from the Environmental Transport Association, there are currently more than 400,000 lorries on Britain's roads.

Road freight now accounts for 8% of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions, with HGV's responsible for 20% of carbon dioxide emissions from all domestic transport.

Bunzl Catering Supplies has stepped up the initiative on its BeGreen policy with the recent addition of two aerodynamic double deck trailers to its NDC trunk operation, to service the catering and hospitality industry.

The policy works to set standards and measure operating improvements in order to reduce its environmental impact.

The aerodynamic teardrop shape increases fuel efficiency by 12-15% and increases the trunk capacity per trailer from 26 to 44 pallets, ensuring increased volume, with mileage and diesel costs also dramatically reduced.

The hydraulic moveable decks allow optimum fill capacity from the trailer when moving high volume, high bulk products, allowing the movement of lightweight high bulk goods such as tissue paper to be transported in the most fuel efficient way.

Max Harris, operations & regional sales director at Bunzl HoReCa said: Our environmental strategy is multifaceted. Our objective is to further reduce our environmental impact and look for new ways to improve our performance. The Bunzl business model of a "One Stop Shop" not only services our customer's needs but also reduces the number of vehicles which are used to distribute our products and therefore reduce our carbon footprint.

"As to the future, we are committed to replacing our entire fleet with aerodynamic vehicles and switching to electric light goods vehicles for distribution in urban areas."
