Gordon Brown congratulates WorldSkills team

11th January 2008, 11:20am

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has met the group of young people that went to Japan and represented Britain in the WorldSkills 2007 competition.

The PM welcomed the 22 strong UK team to Downing Street and spoke to them about the contest, where the UK finished in 11th place.

WorldSkills is held every two years, with 48 member countries competing in 40 different vocational skills.

Will Torrent from Richings Park Golf and Country Club competed in the Confectioner and Pastry Chef category and was awarded a Medallion For Excellence.

Will expressed his delight at being recognised in the competition: "Winning the medallion of excellence was excellent, to know that I have reached a level of excellence on a world stage is unbelievable...and beating the French, Germans and Swiss made it even more sweet!"

Speaking about the UK's achievements at WorldSkills 2007, Gordon Brown praised the team: "I pass my heartfelt congratulations to the whole team for all their efforts at WorldSkills 2007."

He added that skilled employees are detrimental to the economy: "Ensuring the UK has a skilled workforce is fundamentally important to our future economic growth and to the life chances of all our people. What these young people have been able to achieve, and their commitment and determination to do well places them as outstanding role models for other young people."

At least 200,000 spectators were estimated to have attended the intense, four day contest, in Shizuoka, Japan in November.

From the hospitality and catering industry were:

Graham Squire from Claridge's in the cooking category

Will Torrent from Richings Park Golf and Country Club in the confectioner/pastry chef competition

Julie Doig from Gleneagles Hotel in the restaurant service category

The WorldSkills competition comes to the UK in 2011.
