Wetherspoon plans to invest £600,000 on developing the site, with 40 new jobs set to be created. The company does not as yet have an on-site or opening date.
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: "We are delighted to have purchased the former Europa Bar and look forward to redeveloping the site. We have enjoyed great success with our pubs in Glasgow and believe that our new outlet will be an asset to the city's social scene."
Carlo Citti currently operates a further four bars and nightclubs in Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, including the student venue, Campus.
Jonathan Clough, associate director at Christie + Co, added: "This centrally-located business attracted a significant amount of enquires, which led to a number of bids, with the successful bid being in excess of the asking price.
"We are delighted to have secured a national operator such as JD Wetherspoon for this popular venue, which benefits from high levels of passing trade and tourism, plus a high volume of office workers in close proximity."
