Employers work with local schools and colleges to support hospitality sector

10th September 2010, 10:57am

Employers in the north west of England will learn how they can work with their local schools and colleges to support entry-route qualifications for the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector.

The event supported by People 1st, which takes place on 28 September at Hugh Baird College in Liverpool, will provide employers with more information on the qualifications that their future employees are likely to study – such as VRQs, Diplomas and apprenticeships – and how they can get involved in preparing them for the world of work.

It is designed to build on the work that has already been done to build partnerships between educators and employers for the delivery of the Diplomas in Hospitality and Travel and Tourism, following the government's decision to reduce extra support for Diplomas earlier this year.

People 1st's research and policy director, Martin-Christian Kent, commented: 'The hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector is a growing sector. In the next seven years we need an additional 400,000 people to fill a huge variety of jobs in both front line and managerial roles.

"Our ability to attract and develop the skills of these people is crucial, and this event at Hugh Baird College is important in helping employers understand the current qualifications and apprenticeships that make up the key entry routes into the sector.

"It will also help them see how they can enrich the way in which the courses are delivered, to ensure those entering the sector are equipped with the skills and knowledge that they require."
