Contestants prepare for shake-off in Cocktail World Cup
13th June 2007, 12:53pm
Over 600 bartenders are competing in national finals all around the world for a chance to impress the judges with their mixology skills at the Cocktail World Cup in September.
The competition now in its fourth year will see the grand final hosted in New Zealand. There are 42 places to be filled by cocktail makers and as they win in their respective countries they will be allocated golden tickets to the final, which takes place between 9th-16th September 2007.
To add to the adrenalin there will be bungee jumping from bridges, dangling from helicopters, and jet boating.
The Cocktail World Cup UK and Ireland finals take place on the 22nd June at 42 Below Beach Bar in Regents Park. Vodka Professor, Jacob Briars, will host the two-hour event.
Live DJ's, celebrity chefs and a panel of judging celebrities will be present at the shake-off.
Contestants will be put to the test with a mystery box challenge and set the task of creating an original drink judged on their technical flair, flavour, presentation and scent. The top 8 bartenders from the UK and Ireland will head to New Zealand in September to defend the title.
Last year's UK winners were Kevin Armstrong from Match Bar, London, Jose Da Rocha from Eclipse, London and Tim Fitz-Gibson of Raoul's in Oxford.
Each year entrants introduce new ingredients and innovative methods. Molecular mixology was discovered at the 2006 Cocktail World Cup with lemongrass reduction and calcium chloride from Asia, flaming cinnamon sticks from Europe and red-hot pokers from the winning UK team.
Ingredients ranged from an inventive oak smoked syrup to sour plum powder and toasted pinecones.
