Chefs jobs make the list of most popular career moves

27th January 2010, 10:59am

New research has shown that people looking for a career change in 2010 are most likely to choose a job as a chef.

The findings are part of a career guide published by consultancy Career Energy.

The guide is based on research into current and projected business, social and economic trends, related labour supply and demand facts and interviews with lead bodies and employers from selected professions. It covers key facts on demand, entry requirements, finances and pros and cons.

The guide focuses on careers that are appropriate for consideration by older people looking to change their careers as well as people considering training and career options ahead of entering the workforce.

The ten careers are:

Chef
Risk Manager
Social Worker
Maths or Science teacher
Counsellor
Commercial Diver
Welder
Network Architect
Environmental Consultant
Entrepreneur

According to Sara Jayne Stanes, director of the Academy of Culinary Arts: "Catering is a growing industry and one of the top five largest employers in the country so it is definitely a good time to train to be a chef. Like most things it is only worth it if you are going to do it well and you need to have a really good can-do attitude."

Harry Freedman, chief executive of Career Energy, says: "It is no longer unusual for someone to have two or three very different careers in the course of their working life and this will become even more the case as we enter an age where people are also working longer."
