Chef Tom Kitchin launches ‘Eat Fresh Eat Seasonal’ initiative

29th January 2010, 9:53am

Michelin-starred chef Tom Kitchin has launched a national campaign aimed at highlighting the benefits of buying fresh, seasonal food.

He gave his support to the Scottish Government's 'Eat Fresh, Eat Seasonal' initiative which is encouraging people to support Scotland's food and drink industry by rediscovering the benefits of eating food that is in season and to take notice of where their food actually comes from.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, Richard Lochhead, teamed up with celebrity chef Tom Kitchin to launch the campaign in Edinburgh this week.

Lochhead said: "This exciting campaign is being rolled-out across the country over the coming weeks and will be fronted by one of Scotland's most popular chefs. Alongside our national food and drink policy, it will provide the public with the ingredients to make informed food choices and help create a healthier, wealthier and more environmentally sustainable Scotland."

Kitchin, who champions using seasonal produce, added: "We have access to an outstanding natural larder here in Scotland and every season brings with it different, delicious ingredients to try. Fresh, seasonal produce is the essence of good cooking and ensuring that we buy foods that are in season also encourages us to bring more variety to our diet.

A series of road shows will take place across Scotland to support the campaign. The first event takes place at the St James Centre in Edinburgh today and will be followed by the Bon Accord Centre in Aberdeen on Thursday, February 4; the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness on Wednesday, February 10, and the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow on Wednesday February 17.

The Scottish Retail Consortium has also given its support to the national campaign.
