Alex Sullivan – making the sandwich exciting

Alex Sullivan – making the sandwich exciting

CELEBRATING THE SANDWICH

8th January 2010, 4:06pm

A celebration of the sandwich, that most British of snacks, is to be held later this spring at – where else? – Sandwich in Kent.

Pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants in the historic seaside town will all be vying to create The Ultimate Sandwich in a weekend event for all the family, featuring street entertainment and a giant firework spectacular.

The curtain-raiser event to British Sandwich Week, the annual festival raising the profile of all good things 'twixt two slices of bread' takes place on Saturday and Sunday, May 8th and 9th.

Alex Sullivan, a director of Wow Factory Events which is staging the show said: "Once upon a time, people used to refer to 'the humble sandwich' – but not any more. Today, consumers demand imaginative fillings in the finest breads.

"Our competitors will show just what can be done to make the sandwich exciting eating at any time of the day."

Wow Factory Events are currently in sponsorship negotiations with some of Britain's top bread and ingredients manufacturers, outlining a weekend targeted to attract more than 20,000 visitors sampling Britain's best butties and watching cookery and bread-making demonstrations.

All of which would thrill 18th century aristocrat John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who is often credited with inventing the eponymous sandwich.

Not quite true. In fact, the glory should go to his valet (nobody knows his name) who was commanded by the Earl to bring him something to eat while he played cards. He duly carved meat served between two slices of bread.

I think you will find that the Romans invented the sandwich. Why is it not in Rome?

Have your say!
