The awards champion those pubs showing vision, imagination and a level of restraint in their design.
This year five pubs were singled out as winners by a team of judges consisting of architects, historians and experienced pub campaigners.
Winners:
Refurbishment category
Winner - The Bell Inn, Rode, Somerset (BA11 6PW)
Highly Commended - Royal Oak, Wrexham (LL13 8HY)
English Heritage Conservation Award
Winner - The Sportsman, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire (HD1 5AY)
Conversion to Pub Use category
Winner - The Sheffield Tap, Sheffield, South Yorkshire (S1 2BP)
Joe Goodwin Award (for best street corner local)
Winner - The Queen's Head, Burnham on Crouch, Essex (CM0 8JU)
Speaking of the winners, Steven Parissien, an architectural historian, author, and one of the competition judges, said: "The Pub Design Awards judges are delighted to be able to highlight this year's award-winning pubs.
"All serve as excellent models for the future, and show that even in times of recession, depression and cuts, the traditional pub can still serve both as a beacon for its community and a magnificent advertisement for the best of British."
