CAMRA is urging Westminster City Council to consider the role the pub plays in the community before it rules on the noise complaints on December 10th.
On a recent visit to the Punch Bowl, Kim Martin, CAMRA Greater London regional director, said: "What I observed whilst at this great pub was not a den of sin and corruption, but a neighbourhood local where ordinary people had gathered for a drink after work. This is a local amenity, and the exact type of pub CAMRA has campaigned tirelessly for almost 40 years to preserve.
"While we are in no way saying that the Council should take the complaints made against the pub lightly, we would like to reinforce that the pub has taken reasonable steps to control noise levels, namely in employing door staff and ensuring customers are inside the pub by 9pm.
"Pubs are closing at a rapid rate across the UK, with some shutting their doors blaming high Government taxation, unfair supermarket competition, increased regulatory burdens, and shifting consumer trends, so for a pub to be lost under these circumstances would be heartbreaking. CAMRA will be stepping up its efforts to lobby Westminster City Council in regard to the future of the Punch Bowl, but hope in the meantime the pub can communicate with the complainants to resolve this issue."
