Burger King debuts first energy efficient restaurant in Germany

17th June 2010, 12:11pm

Fast-food chain Burger King has launched a prototype restaurant which uses renewable energy to save more than 45% of electricity.

By using photovoltaic and wind energy systems Burger King calculates savings of more than 120 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Jonathan Fitzpatrick, general manager of Burger King in Germany explained more: "With the opening of this restaurant, the BURGER KING® brand is delivering a trend-setting, energy efficient concept that supports our global corporate social responsibility program and environmental efforts."

A heat utilization system ensures the recovery of 73% of the implemented primary energy, photovoltaic and wind energy systems save up to 45% of electricity in comparison to a standard restaurant.

"The key is the mix of an energy efficient construction with optimal use of existing energy potential and the generation of electricity through a restaurant's own systems –accomplished at a price which makes serial production possible", explains Heinz-Peter Dickes, director development for Burger King, Central Europe.

723 solar modules generate more than 53,500 kWh of electricity per year which corresponds to the annual consumption of 15 four-person households. Long-lasting LED bulbs reduce energy consumption for lighting by 55%.

Generating hot water which, in a typical restaurant, uses nearly half of the energy consumption can now be produced solely by using the excess heat loss of generated energy.

The typical advertising pylon will be replaced by a wind turbine in Waghäusel which can contribute up to 2,500 kWh to the power supply of the restaurant. The location will also have a solar-powered electric charging station.
