Broomhall Castle, just outside of Stirling, is for sale

The Glasgow Office of business agents, Christie + Co, has been appointed to sell Broomhall Castle Hotel, which occupies an elevated position in the village of Menstrie, just outside the bustling city of Stirling in Clackmannanshire.

The castle was originally built as a private residence in 1874 in the style of Balmoral Castle by the younger of the Johnstone brothers, who were into shipping and wool mills. Since then, the building has been used by an Italian riding school and was a boy's prep school before being damaged during the Second World War, when it was left empty as a ruin until 1985 then was converted into a nursing home. The current owners purchased the castle in 2003 and it now operates as a family-owned hotel.

Built over three storeys, the castle is dominated by a central tower feature with further parapet features to the front. Over the years, various extensions have been added to the east and west gables and the hotel now comprises 10 en suite letting bedrooms, a 45-cover restaurant, a lounge, a bar, a 30-cover tearoom and a function hall.

There are a further four en suite letting bedrooms, which are currently used by staff and for storage and two apartments; one with three en suite bedrooms, a lounge and a kitchen and one with a bedroom, a lounge and a shower room, which provide accommodation for the owners. These could easily be converted into guest accommodation providing a further eight en suite rooms.

Graeme Smith, from Christie + Co's Glasgow Office, who is handling the sale, commented; "Over the past five years, the vendors have put a lot of time and effort into developing, establishing and refurbishing Broomhall Castle to an extremely high standard.

The business has continued to go from strength to strength and has established itself as a primary location for food and wherever possible the finest of local produce is used. The hotel has also become popular as a wedding venue and has many bookings leading up to 2010. We feel that the future of this business is going to be extremely buoyant as it is, without a doubt, one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the area."

Christie + Co is seeking £1,200,000 for the freehold interest of Broomhall Castle Hotel.
