Brits will continue drinking wine despite recession

16th January 2009, 10:49am

New figures show that consumers in Britain will increase their wine consumption despite the economic downturn.

Britain is now the world's biggest consumer of imported wine and wine drinking will grow over the next four years, according to Vinexpo.

In 2007, imported wine into the UK reached 135.8 million 9 litre cases, which equates to over 1.6 billion bottles.

Wine drinking in Britain has increased by 12% over the last five years and Vinexpo predict a further uplift of 6%.

The figures show that white wine is the most popular in the UK, with rosé rising fast and red wine seeing a drop.

Over the next five years white wine consumption is expected to top 823 million bottles; volume sales of rosé are predicted to rise by 47% and consumption of red wine is set to fall to 687 million bottles.
