The idea was the brainchild of Best Western CEO David Clarke who having recently celebrated his 60th birthday, discovered that he is now entitled to a £250 winter fuel allowance.
Clarke said: "I'm in the fortunate position that I can afford to pay for my fuel bills and was wondering how many others are also in this position, so wouldn't it be a good idea if those who could, gave some or all of this money to people with a greater need?"
Working with Shelter, Best Western has set up a donations website, www.send2some1cold.com, where members of the public can donate to this worthwhile cause.
The idea has taken off and Best Western hotels are being asked to promote the site to guests and visitors.
Clarke emphasised that this is not a political statement, "We want to see if we can encourage some of the many thousands of people Best Western interacts with daily to contribute to this good cause, and the bad weather we're currently experiencing really focuses the mind on those less fortunate than ourselves."
