Area winners announced for National Fish & Chip Shop of the Year

13th October 2009, 11:44am

Twenty one fish and chip shops from across the UK are celebrating today after being named as the area winners in the National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition.

Run by Seafish, the authority on seafood, the competition is in its 22nd year and recognises the quality, value and choice offered by fish and chip shops across the UK and rewards the nation's best with the coveted title.

The 21 area winners now await a further round of judging which will determine the top 10 shops in the UK who will then go head-to-head in the grand final in January next year.

Nikki Hawkins, project manager for the competition at Seafish, said: "We now have to look closely at each of the area winners in order to find our top 10 finalists. As customers become more aware of environmental issues, fish and chip shops are stocking alternative varieties of fish and taking responsibility for ensuring a sustainable future for the industry. In fact sustainability is a major criteria in the judging process."
